Select Cottages feature seven award winning self-catering 400 year old Grade II Listed holiday cottages full of charm, character and home from home comforts in Eskdale - Lakeland's finest valley. A glorious setting nestling beneath England's highest mountain, in the picturesque hamlet of Boot with its traditional cosy Inns.
With a stunning location in Eskdale- one of the Lake District's loveliest valleys deep in the heart of the National Park amidst the Western Fells and lakes- these fine Elizabethan barns and farmhouse, have been imaginatively converted into high quality self-catering holiday cottages and comprehensively equipped to the English Tourism Council's 4 and 5 Stars Standard.
No longer a working farm, Bridge End - as its name implies, has an idyllic setting at the end of the picturesque village of Boot beside a beautiful 17th Century packhorse bridge over the tumbling Whillan Beck. One of the Lake District's "scenic hamlets" Boot, nestles beneath mighty Scafell and despite having only some twenty to thirty residents boasts a church, post office, craft shop, corn mill museum and two traditional inns.
Reached down a quaint cobbled lane; these are romantic cottages of tremendous charm, character and quality. All accommodation has ancient oak beams, local pink granite stonework, fine oak kitchens, period style bathrooms and sumptuous furnishings. All have double glazing, full gas central heating, powerful showers, colour TV, oven, hob, microwave and dishwasher. Small cottages have a fridge with freezer compartment; large cottages have a separate fridge and freezer. Large cottages also have a video player. All bathrooms have over bath showers. All cottages have CD radio cassette players. Sorry, we do not take pets.
Grounds of ¾ of an acre with a delightful walled garden and larger riverside paddock. Barbecues and plenty of garden furniture. Laundry room with washing machine and tumble dryer. On your arrival, you will find your cottage warm; beds made up, a welcome tray, fresh milk in the fridge and flowers from the garden (in season).
This is an area of superlatives. Within the village is England's oldest working water mill, within walking distance are Scafell Pike, England's highest mountain; its steepest road, Hardknott Pass; and its deepest lake, the dramatic Wastwater. Close by there are also the 3,000 year old Bronze Age stone circles on the moor above Boot, the well preserved Hardknott Roman Fort and Stanley Ghyll waterfall described by many as Lakeland's loveliest.
For the more active, you can hike up a different mountain each day right from your cottage door, and enjoy not having to use the car all week. There are also numerous outdoor activities close by including climbing, canoeing, abseiling, pony trekking and mountain biking.
The less active have countless gentle walks along level pathways, beside rivers, through woods and meadows, often passing a friendly inn if refreshments are needed! There is also the Ravenglass and Eskdale narrow gauge steam railway - one of England's most beautiful train journeys which has its terminus just ¼ mile from Boot. If you prefer touring, all the lakes can be reached by car from here. There is fishing in some of the local lakes and tarns, country houses, castles and gardens to visit and a landscape waiting to be painted.
